Pork Share FAQ
Everything you need to know about half and whole hog shares — pricing, hanging weight, cuts, smoking and curing, freezer space, and pickup.
A pork share is a way to purchase a larger portion of locally raised pork directly from The Robinson Ranch. Instead of buying individual packages at a store, you reserve a half or whole hog, choose your preferred cuts later in the process, and receive a freezer-ready supply of pork after processing.
The Robinson Ranch offers half hog and whole hog shares. A half hog is a great fit for trying farm-raised pork or for smaller freezers, while a whole hog works well for families that enjoy bacon, chops, and sausage all year long.
Take-home amounts are approximate and vary by animal and your cut selections, but a half hog typically provides around 85 pounds of pork and a whole hog around 170 pounds.
Pork shares are priced at $3.25 per pound based on the animal's hanging weight, plus butcher fees. Butcher charges typically include a per-pound processing fee along with kill and smoke charges, paid according to the butcher's instructions.
Hanging weight is the weight of the animal after initial processing but before the pork is cut, trimmed, and packaged. It is higher than the take-home weight of your finished cuts and is the industry-standard basis for pricing custom pork shares.
Based on an example 200-pound hanging weight, a whole hog totals approximately $995 and a half hog approximately $497, including example butcher fees. Because every animal is different, your exact final totals are calculated after your animal's actual hanging weight is recorded.
No. Your $250 reservation deposit is not an additional charge. It holds your place and is credited toward the final amount you owe The Robinson Ranch for your pork share.
You do not need to select your cuts when you reserve. After your share is coordinated with the local butcher, you will complete your cutting instructions, including choices like chop thickness, bacon, ham, sausage flavors, and roast sizes. First-time buyers are guided through every option.
Depending on your share and selections, a pork share can include bacon, ham or ham steaks, pork chops, spare ribs, shoulder roasts, ground pork and seasoned sausage, and other favorites. If you choose boneless pork chops, you can also receive baby back ribs. Available cuts and options depend on the animal, share type, and butcher.
The butcher's processing fee typically includes vacuum sealing all packages, grinding and seasoning sausage, and smoking or curing items like bacon and ham. Your butcher will confirm the applicable options when you complete your cutting instructions.
As a general guide, a half hog takes roughly 3 to 4 cubic feet of freezer space and a whole hog roughly 6 to 8 cubic feet. All cuts arrive frozen and vacuum sealed, ready to go straight into your freezer.
Choose the half or whole hog option that fits your household, then place your $250 deposit on the Reserve Your Share page. A member of The Robinson Ranch family will follow up to confirm your reservation and walk you through the next steps.
